People and businesses across the West Midlands can now access O2’s 5G+ (standalone 5G) mobile network after it switched on services across the region.

This rollout brings next-generation mobile connectivity to 47 large towns and cities, 79 smaller towns and 597 rural villages, helping more O2 customers get a faster, more reliable mobile experience at no extra cost.

With more than 5 million people and countless businesses based in the region, it’s good news for customers working, living, and commuting in the area. Here’s what it means in practice.

Where has O2 upgraded its network?

O2’s mobile network has been upgraded across the West Midlands including in Birmingham, Coventry, Cannock, Dudley, Stoke-on-Trent, Solihull, Stratford-upon-Avon, Royal Leamington Spa, Rugby, Warwick, Wolverhampton and West Bromwich.

Importantly, all towns, cities and counties included in the 5G+ rollout programme have at least 90% outdoor 5G+ coverage — so O2 mobile customers can be confident they’ll get broad network coverage and it won’t just be limited to a few small locations.

What is 5G+ and how is it different?

O2’s 5G+ mobile network uses standalone 5G technology, meaning it runs on dedicated 5G infrastructure end-to-end.

Unlike earlier 5G services, which relied partly on existing 4G systems, 5G+ allows mobile networks to operate more efficiently and deliver significantly improved performance for customers.

In practice, that allows the O2 network to deliver:

  • Faster mobile speeds
  • Lower latency (reduced delay when data travels across the network)
  • Improved reliability and coverage during busy periods
  • Increased capacity for connected devices

How widespread is O2’s 5G+ network nationally?

When it comes to choosing a mobile network provider, you want the service to work everywhere you go.

O2’s 5G+ network is the UK’s best 5G standalone mobile network, available to more than 85% of the UK’s population. This regional rollout is part of a wider £700m Mobile Transformation Plan.

Do I need to pay more?

The good news is that O2 mobile customers can benefit at no extra cost, as long as they have a compatible device and SIM. You can check if your device is 5G+ ready, and order a new SIM if you need one here: https://www.o2.co.uk/5g-plus
