PhonepubWe’ve all been there – you’re in the pub, nursing a drink and waiting for your delicious food to arrive. What better time to check Facebook, or catch up on the football scores? Ah. A problem – the pub’s in an old bank building with bomb shelter-like walls. Your plan’s foiled and it’s back to flipping beer mats on the edge of the table.

Not for long…

We’ve just announced a partnership with Mitchells & Butlers, which will see free O2 Wifi introduced to their 1600-strong chain of pubs and restaurants, including favourites such as Harvester, Toby Carvery and All Bar One. Soon, you’ll be able to ditch that beer mat and take advantage of O2 Wifi’s fast, reliable internet access to tweet, poke, email, or cheat at the pub quiz (which we clearly wouldn’t ever encourage).

All this is starting to happen now – we’re installing O2 Wifi gear in 199 Harvester restaurants by early summer (it’ll probably reach the beer garden, too), with the likes of Sizzling Pubs, O’Neill’s and Vintage Inns all getting the O2 Wifi treatment by the end of 2012, along with the rest of the Mitchells & Butlers family.

Using O2 Wifi will be as easy as buying a pack of Pork Scratchings – it’ll take just seconds to set up on your smartphone, tablet or laptop. And, unless you’re on very good terms with the landlord, it’ll be cheaper than the Pork Scratchings, too – it’s free for O2 customers. And it’s free for non-O2 customers. It’s free for everybody.

Arguably the best part of all this? That picture of your cold pint will be on Facebook and making your friends jealous even more quickly than ever before.

To find a pub near you that’ll soon be O2 Wifi-enabled, take a look here.
