We think there are over five million GLAMs in the UK, so you could well be one of the GLAMs. But what’s a GLAM?

Our O2 Digital Families Report has been looking at the way technology’s used in homes across the UK and it looks like Gadget Loving Active Mums – or GLAMs – are ruling the roost!

There are some interesting statistics to back this up. Our research showed that mums are often in control at home – 56% run the TV, 66% program their Sky+ and 84% control access to the family computers.

Once on the computer we’ve seen 76% of mothers regularly use Facebook, 58% regularly use Skype and 23% are active Twitter users. They’re also planning all the families technology purchases, even in tough economic conditions, with 39% wanting a new TV, 29% wanting a washing machine and 28% after a dishwasher next. The dads of the house have slightly different priorities though – 34% want a games machine and 33% really want to upgrade to the full Sky TV package.

It doesn’t seem to get much better for the men – 38% are unaware of how computer savvy their wives are. It turns out that 50% of mothers believe they know at least as much as their partner about technology, while 39% are in charge of fixing the PC if it breaks down.

We’ve been carrying out this research as part of our look into how families use technology like the O2 Joggler in their everyday lives.

Here’s what Debbie Daley, the mum of world champion diver Tom Daley, thinks. “With three children under 15 and working part-time myself, it wouldn’t be easy in normal circumstances to manage family life. But with Tom’s training schedule meaning that he trains for several hours a day, six days a week, I really do need to be organised to make sure that everything at home runs smoothly. I find technology like my O2 Joggler and online calendar invaluable at making sure everyone knows what’s happening every day and no appointments get forgotten about. Without these sorts of technology, I’d definitely find it a lot harder to fit everything in!”
