O2 today announced that the unprecedented demand for iPhone 3G will significantly outweigh the supply at launch when the device goes on sale in O2 and Carphone Warehouse stores from 8:02am on Friday 11 July*.

The exact number of devices will vary by store based on footfall and previous demand for iPhone but on average it will be around a few dozen and it is anticipated that O2 will sell out of all of this stock fairly quickly. The O2 online store www.o2.co.uk is currently out of stock of iPhone 3G’s. Updates about when more stock is available online will be posted on the site.

O2 expects that it will be several weeks before stock shortages diminish, but is confident that there will be sufficient supply to match demand by the end of the summer. In the meantime existing iPhone customers can upgrade their iPhone software to version 2.0 from 11 July through iTunes.

Existing O2 customers will need to visit an O2 or Carphone Warehouse store to upgrade.

To ensure fairness and transparency O2 will sell the device on a strictly first come, first served basis. One iPhone 3G will be available per consumer customer and two for business customers in store.

As iPhone 3G is being sold on an O2 18 month minimum term contract, all new and existing customers will need to have two forms of identification, a credit card to prove identity and a bank or utility statement to proof address to pass a credit check when they come to an O2 store. The average sales transaction processing time per customer will be up to 20 minutes.

Additional deliveries from Apple are expected to arrive weekly for the foreseeable future. Stock updates will be posted regularly on o2.co.uk.
