O2 today celebrates winning recognition at the 2008 International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA). The O2 Cocoon was rewarded for pairing seamless design with sophisticated technology picking up a bronze award in the IDEAs ‘Communication Tools’ category.

The O2 Cocoon, which is now sold out across the UK, was selected from over 1500 entries as one of the year’s finest designs. The judging criteria focused on areas such as design innovation, ecological responsibility and appropriate design and aesthetics. The International Design Excellence Awards is one of the world’s most prestigious design competitions, presented by the Industrial Designers Society of America and sponsored by BusinessWeek, who will feature the O2 Cocoon in their special edition magazine available in the UK from July 19.

“To be recognised by such a prestigious jury is a testament to how much of a turning point the O2 Cocoon represented in the field of own branded devices.” John Davies, Head of Own Branded Devices Marketing, O2 UK said. “The O2 Cocoon’s impact set a precedent, its great usability and distinctive style is something O2 look to achieve in all future devices.”

Launched in August 2007, O2 Cocoon was a product of extensive consumer research and has already won a National Swedish Design Award. Its design mirrored the belief that consumers seek a stylish mobile phone that has effortless functionality. Packed with a range of eye and ear-catching features, the O2 Cocoon is capable of holding 1000 high sound quality songs and has a unique LED display, which can be programmed to show the time, ‘now playing’ information, caller ID and also display the beginning of text messages as they arrive.
