O2 announced today it would donate £1,000 to the Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team as a gesture of thanks following their dramatic rescue of O2 customer Simon Moran.    Mr Moran was out walking on Grasmoor last September when he fell down a gully.  Fortunately, his phone survived the fall and he was able to contact his wife at his home in Cockermouth.  She in turn contacted the Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team.   Seven members of the Team were airlifted on to the summit of Grasmoor whilst others headed for the base of Grasmoor.  They were able to treat Simon on the spot and then winch him to safety.    Mr Moran said: “It was a miracle that my phone survived the fall and that – thanks to O2 – I was able to get a signal and make the call to my wife.  I am extremely grateful to the Mountain Rescue team.  They undoubtedly saved my life.”     Mike Park of the Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team said “57% of the calls received by the Mountain Rescue Team are from mobile phones.  They have had a positive impact when it comes to mountain rescue by drastically reducing the time it takes to get injured people out of difficulty and on to hospital”.   Tom Powell from O2 UK said “We’re pleased we were able to help a customer in this way, and hope that our donation to Cockermouth Mountain Rescue will help them with their vital work”.
