Did you know, according to research conducted by Lookout there are an estimated 28 million old phones lying unused in drawers and cupboard across the UK?

In order to give people the opportunity to recycle their old phones, we will be in Liverpool Street station in Central London during National Recycle Week – the 16th -20th June.  In association with O2/Network Rail  we will provide recycle tubes that will  be distributed on the station providing a secure and sustainable collection point for old mobile phones.

According to research O2 conducted last year, there are approximately 70 million unused handsets in the UK with an additional 30 million sold annually. To date O2’s recycling initiative, O2 Recycle, has given back £77million to customers and recycled over 1 million devices. O2 Recycle, part of the O2 Think Big environment initiative, offers cash payments of up to £260 for unwanted gadgets; including mobile phones, tablets, MP3 players, handheld consoles, digital cameras and SatNavs. The scheme is available to both O2 and non O2 customers.

We’re collecting for a great cause too – the money raised through recycling this phones will go to the charity Railway Children. Railway Children is an international children’s charity. They fight for vulnerable children who live alone at risk on the streets, where they suffer abuse and exploitation. In the UK, society often denies their existence, and in other countries the problem is so prevalent that it has become ‘normal’.

They run away or are forced to leave homes where they suffer poverty, violence, abuse and neglect. They find themselves living on the streets because there is nowhere else to go and no one left to turn to. The problems they face on the streets are often even worse than those they endured at home. Railway Children race to reach children as soon as they arrive on the streets and intervene before an abuser can. Their work enables them to get to street children before the streets get to them.

So, if you’re passing through Liverpool St Station during National Recycle Week, don’t forget to bring your old phone so we can recycle it for you and raise money for this amazing charity. Or if you’re looking for more information on O2 Recycle or Think Big visit http://www.o2recycle.co.uk.
