Nokia-n8-tether-1With both 3G and Wi-Fi built into the latest Nokia smartphones, you're not just limited to browsing the internet on your handset itself. Instead, you'll be able to connect to a PC, and use your Nokia as a modem. To find out how, join us after the break, where we'll be running you through the steps needed to tether your Nokia smartphone to a computer.

Hook up to a PC
The first thing you'll need to do is to connect your Nokia to your PC. We used a Nokia N8 running Symbian ^3 to set things up, with a USB cable to connect the two. As soon as you connect the cable, you'll find a Nokia N8 pop-up window appears in Windows 7.

You'll need to click the top left icon in the open window – called “Nokia Ovi Suite – Download and Install”. Double tap the icon, and click “Save File” when asked what to do. This downloads Ovi Suite – the software you'll need to get online with your Nokia handset.

Install Ovi Suite
Once the software has downloaded, double tap to run, and then click “Install”. It takes a couple of minutes to install, but once running you're good to go. Your Nokia and Ovi Suite automatically configures the right settings to get online with O2, so you won't have to do anything technical.

Switch your Nokia to modem mode
Click the USB icon in the top right-hand corner of your Nokia. Then click “Connect PC to net”. As soon as you've done this, you're phone is ready to work as a modem.

Connect to the net
Run the newly installed Ovi Suite, and tap “Tools” from the option bar at the top. Then click “Connect to the internet”. That's all you'll have to do from now on – run Ovi Suite and click Connect to the internet, and you'll be able to browse the internet at your own leisure. When you're finished, simply tap the “disconnect” button.

Symbian S60 5th Edition
Although we used a Nokia N8 to tether phone and laptop, you'll be able to do exactly the same using older handsets like the Nokia N97 Mini or Nokia 5800. Again – tap the USB icon on the top right-hand corner of the phone's screen to ensure it's set to modem mode, and it's a simple case of installing and running Ovi Suite as before.
