O2 today announces it has become the first UK mobile operator to receive more than a million likes on its Facebook page. The page, http://www.facebook.com/o2uk, has been at the centre of O2’s digital strategy since its inception and has played host to a huge range of campaigns and activity including personalised O2 Guru videos, the ability to top up, pick top 40 music and hundreds of giveaways. Staffed by O2’s Social Media Response Team, the page now helps more than 3,500 fans per month.

Biggest in the UK

O2’s Facebook page received its millionth like earlier today giving it a lead of over 280,000 likes over its nearest rival. O2 also leads in audience size on Twitter with its main Twitter channel, http://www.twitter.com/o2, serving over 217,000 followers compared to its nearest rival, which has 130,000. Meanwhile, on YouTube, O2 is also ahead with 24m views on its videos.

“Social media has been at the core of our digital business strategy since 2008 and is pivotal to how we engage our customers in a digital world,” said Kristian Lorenzon, Head of Social Media at O2. “What started with one person now encompasses a team of over 25, creating a wide range of campaigns and activities to bring people closer to our brand, as well as listening and responding to questions and comments from our loyal followers and fans.”

The Fetch Off

To celebrate reaching the million likes milestone, O2 is partnering with Sony to give its fans the chance to win exclusive technology prizes in a new competition called ‘The Fetch Off’. A thousand of O2’s playful Facebook fans are being given a numbered tennis ball to be launched into a digital field for dogs to fetch. The first ten numbered balls they bring back will each win a massive Sony technology bundle, made up of Sony’s amazing Xperia Z1, its innovative Xperia Tablet Z, a Sony SmartWatch 2 and a QX10 optical lens.
