Week 2 is just over and this the school we just finished in was markedly different to the one from Week 1.

Most of the kids were hungry in the school when they arrived and we gave them as much bread and fruit as we could. At the start of the week, the teachers didn´t seem to teach much as the school had no order to it, with kids sitting around doing nothing. By the end of the week, at least the kids were in class so hopefully that will continue when we leave.

Yesterday we painted one of the walls in the school as well graffiti-ing the water tank, which added some greatly needed colour to the school. The kids really enjoyed that but not sure what their parents said when they got home covered in paint.

I played a lot of sport with them (football and softball) in the last week and when the kids are in their shorts and t-shirts, they are pretty much skin and bone. Their diet consists almost solely of maize and some fruit. Very little protein or vitamins.

Next week I am off to Los Lucas which is supposed to be the best equipped of the 3 schools and the teachers are definitely teaching.

Tonight we are having a party with paella and wine, so looking forward to some much needed European food. Bananas mixed with re-fried kidney beans and sugar was this mornings breakfast. Strange mixture but actually lovely.

Thats all for now,
Terry.
