• Virgin Media O2 has successfully delivered reliable mobile coverage to the coastal village of Craster in Northumberland, an area that previously had no coverage from any mobile operator
  • The new site will provide coverage to the whole of Craster, a popular tourist destination, and will also connect people visiting Dunstanburgh Castle to the north of the village
  • The operator is using a Starlink mobile backhaul solution to provide residents, businesses and visitors to the area with fast and reliable mobile coverage for the first time ever

Virgin Media O2 has brought mobile coverage to Craster in Northumberland for the first time, following the installation of a new mobile site in the coastal village.

The new mast will provide reliable mobile signal to the whole of Craster, which is an important tourist destination attracting more than 250,000 visitors every single year. Dunstanburgh Castle, the nearby National Trust site, is also set to benefit, with the connectivity set to improve the experience for visitors.

The operator is using a Starlink mobile backhaul solution to deliver reliable 4G coverage to the area, as the remote area does not currently have access to the fibre networks typically used to carry mobile traffic to and from the mast. Once new fibre lines are installed to connect the area later this year, the site will also be upgraded, bringing faster 5G connectivity to Craster and the surrounding areas.

Virgin Media O2 worked with Atlas Tower Group to deliver the new site, which has been welcomed by the local community, including Northumberland County Council, Craster Parish Council and other key community groups.

Steven Verigotta, Director of Mobile Delivery at Virgin Media O2, said: “As part of our commitment to improving rural connectivity, we’re using innovative satellite connectivity to bring mobile coverage to Craster for the first time. Our investment to deliver reliable connectivity in this beautiful area will be a boon for the many visitors that come here each year, transforming their experience and improving opportunities for local businesses and residents.”

The development has been welcomed by residents, businesses, and visitors who are set to benefit from a reliable mobile signal.

Craster Parish Council Vice-Chair, Cllr Margaret Brooks, expressed her joy at the project’s success: “This has truly been a labour of love for our community. The mast is more than just a symbol of progress – it’s a lifeline.

“Reliable mobile signal is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity. This project will make a real difference in the daily lives of residents, businesses, and tourists alike.”

Local Ward Councillor Wendy Pattison praised the project’s impact: “This is a huge step for Craster and Dunstan. The improvements in connectivity will make a meaningful difference in the lives of all who live, work, and visit here.

“I’m delighted to see how this partnership has come together to create such a positive change for the community.

“I would also like to thank Northern Powergrid for their support.”
