Virgin Media has completed the rollout of its ultrafast broadband network in Moira and Magheralin, County Down, Northern Ireland, which will bring the UK’s fastest widely available speeds in the UK to more than 2,500 homes and businesses.
As part of its ‘Project Lightning’ network expansion programme, Virgin Media is expanding its ultrafast broadband network across the UK, bringing average top speeds of 516Mbps to residents and small businesses.
This will help transform the quality of broadband in Moira and Magheralin where the average (median) download speeds are 49.8Mbps and 39.1Mbps*.
The company is also bringing next generation gigabit broadband to its entire network of 15 million homes by the end of 2021 as part of its new Gig1 service.
Residents from Moira and Magheralin will benefit from fibre to the premises (FTTP) technology which allows for smooth, reliable connectivity in the home. With a 516Mbps connection, files, films and games become unbelievably quick to stream, download and upload:
· Download a standard HD movie file (5GB) in two minutes, compared to more than 14 minutes on the average local connection in Moira;
· Download a 25GB console game in 10 minutes, compared to over an hour on the average local connection in Moira**
Seamus McCorry, Regional Director for Northern Ireland, at Virgin Media, said: “We’re delighted to have finished our network expansion in the villages of Moira and Magheralin in County Down. Residents and local businesses will now have access to our ultrafast broadband services, making it easier and quicker to do all the things they love and need to do.”
Alderman Allan Ewart, MBE, Chairman of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council’s Development Committee, said: “The rolling out of this ultrafast broadband is great news for our residents and businesses based in Moira. Improving connectivity throughout our area is a key focus for the council and we are driving forward a number of major initiatives looking at the digital infrastructure and skills that will help us deliver the ambition of becoming a digital-first organisation and council area. Digitally connecting our society brings many social and economic benefits and as an organisation we want to give an enhanced public service to our residents and businesses.”
