• Suitcase Stress: Two-thirds (67%) of Brits dread luggage rules, with 48% terrified of surprise charges for oversized bags.
  • Bin It to Win It: 39% of holidaymakers have ditched personal items at the gate – including expensive toiletries and cosmetics worth up to £100 – to dodge extra baggage fees.
  • Fee Fighters: O2 has partnered with Live The Dash creating ‘Suitcase Headphones’ to highlight the absurd lengths travellers go to dodge hidden holiday costs.
  • Roam freely: With O2 remaining the only major UK network offering inclusive EU roaming  as standard (up to 25GB across 49 destinations), holidaymakers have one less hidden holiday fee to worry about.

Sun-seeking Brits are reaching boiling point over extra travel costs, with millions suffering from pre-flight gate anxiety over hidden fees before even stepping onto the tarmac. More than two thirds (67%) of UK travellers worry about hand luggage restrictions, with 48% terrified they’ll be stung by an unexpected fee for an oversized bag.

Searches for “airport luggage restrictions” have increased by 180% year-on-year on Google Trends, highlighting how desperate holidaymakers are to avoid costly surprises at the boarding gate.

Packing smarter, not lighter

To shine a light on the extreme lengths holidaymakers go to avoid extra costs, O2 has partnered with travel content creators, Live The Dash to create the first-of-its-kind ‘Suitcase Headphones’. Designed to conceal extra belongings while also allowing users to listen to calming music on the go, the invention tackles travellers’ anxiety around hand luggage restrictions and unexpected baggage fees.

This quirky new packing hack comes as nearly a fifth (17%) of holidaymakers admit they start stressing at check-in, while 8% get hit by gate anxiety the second they reach the boarding gate.

To avoid hidden airport charges, nearly two in five (39%) have deliberately thrown away or abandoned personal belongings at the gate to pass size limits – with 20% ditching expensive toiletries and cosmetics. Almost a third (32%) of Brits have abandoned items worth up to £50, while 7% have been forced to abandon items worth up to £100.

Desperate to cling onto their possessions, more than a third (37%) of holidaymakers admit to cramming extra clothes into their hand luggage wherever possible. When that isn’t enough, travellers resort to a range of last-minute tactics at the gate, from wearing heavy boots rather than packing them (14%) and concealing items in duty-free shopping bags (12%), to tying extra layers around their waists (11%) or hiding an additional bag under a bulky coat (9%).

The fear of flying (with luggage)

The baggage fear is justified. One in five (20%) travellers have been forced to pay unexpected fees at the boarding gate multiple times (2-4 times), with Brits shelling out £28 in surprise baggage penalties over the past year alone on average. Even worse, 15% have been hit multiple times with a gate fee that cost more than their original flight ticket.

Hidden holiday fees

Hidden costs don’t stop at the airport. When asked about the most frustrating unexpected expenses on a European holiday, Brits ranked the following as their biggest bugbears:

  1. Hotel WiFi and daily mobile roaming fees (28%)
  2. Paying extra to sit next to a partner or family member on the plane (20%)
  3. Paying inflated currency exchange rates for travel money (9%)
  4. Paying for food and drink on the plane (9%)
  5. Paying hotel city taxes upon arrival (8%).

An O2 spokesperson said: “We’re in the peak of summer holiday season, and with holidaymakers across the country fretting over baggage limits, with some even throwing away their belongings to dodge extra luggage fees, it’s clear we could all do with some creative packing hacks. Whether it’s wearing multiple layers, stuffing clothing in shoes or inventing wearable hand-luggage, our research shows that extra travel costs are impacting people’s airport experience as well as their pockets. While travellers may have little control over baggage fees, roaming costs are one holiday expense O2 customers don’t have to worry about, with inclusive EU roaming up to 25GB available in 49 destinations as standard and at no extra cost.”

Holidaymakers have the chance to win a pair of Suitcase Headphones via O2’s customer newsletter entering the prize draw via the link here. Entries close at 11:59pm on Sunday 9 August, and the winner will be announced via email on Monday 10 August.
