Prof. Robert Joyce is the Director of Mobile Access Engineering at Virgin Media O2, leading the organisation responsible for planning, delivering and optimising the O2 network — now the UK’s largest and most advanced mobile network.

With more than 30 years of global experience in mobile telecommunications, Robert has held senior roles across operators and vendors worldwide. His career includes designing the mobile network for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, launching the world’s first commercial 5G network in 2018, and contributing to the launch of O2 Satellite, Europe’s first direct‑to‑device mobile satellite service.

Robert has published extensively on mobile communications, holds a PhD in Self‑Organising Mobile Networks, and serves as a Visiting Professor at the University of Surrey.
